The Tobacco Prevention Awareness Cessation Coalition
Is an agency sponsored by the New York State Department of Health whose goals are to advocate, initiate, fund, and support activities that promote the prevention and cessation of tobacco use among Jefferson and Lewis County (NY) residents. Ultimately, the purpose of this community tobacco prevention coalition, and its programs and services is to better educate Jefferson and Lewis County residents regarding the risks of tobacco use and to reduce rates of tobacco use and tobacco related death and disease in the two county area.
440,000 Americans die each year from tobacco use.
- Tobacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire and AIDS combined.
- Most smokers report that they started smoking in their early teens.
- All tobacco products contain nicotine.
- Nicotine is as addictive as heroin and more addictive then alcohol.
- There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke.
- 64 of the 4,000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke cause cancer.
- Secondhand smoke kills over 53,000 Americans each day.
- Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventable death in the United States.
